Power Electronic Capacitors
Capacitors for Power Electronic applications cover a very large spectrum of rated voltage (AC or DC), capacitance, and other electrical parameters. Cambridge Capacitors can supply suitable designs for a large variety of these requirements and almost every one is unique and specific to the customer's specification.
All Cambridge Capacitors Power Electronic capacitors are made using very low loss metallised polypropylene film in a dry construction. (No potential problem of liquid leakage.)
Typical applications are:
- Discharge
- Commutation
- Constant Voltage Transformers (CVT)
The construction and size of the capacitors depends on requirements, particularly the capacitance and voltage, but also the other electrical requirements and life expectancy. The main options are as follows:
A. Cylindrical cases.
- Plastic or Aluminium in sizes from 25 x 49 mm to 63 x 125 mm.
- Terminations can be leads, solder tags, single or multiple push-on tags, or M6 studs.
- Voltage ratings between 50 and 660 V a.c., or between 400 and 1500 V d.c. (discharge).
- Capacitance from 0.5 to 100 µF.
- RMS current up to 25 Amps.
- Peak discharge current up to 5000 Amps peak.
- Discharge rating (dV / dt) up to 100 V / microsecond
B. Box capacitors.
- These are generally custom designed to match the physical and electrical requirements of the application.
- Terminations are usually studs of various sizes but can be leads or other types.
- Voltage ratings up to 880 V a.c. or 3000 V d.c. (discharge).
- Capacitance up to 1200 µF or more. (Can be multi-section within this total.)
- RMS current up to 100 Amps or more.
- Peak discharge current - depends on specific design.
- Discharge rating (dV / dt) up to 100 V / microsecond.
- Box sizes currently available up to 405 x 260 x 320 mm.
Not all of the above parameters are always available together. Designs beyond these ratings can also be considered.
